When building German vocabulary for adults, always memorize the article with the noun. For example, when memorizing the word for ‘cat,’ learn it as ‘die katze.’
If the noun is plural, the article is always ‘die,’ regardless of the gender used with the singular version of the noun.
Tip Two: Word Order Is Important
A standard sentence follows the subject-verb-object structure, except when a verb is used in a subordinate clause. In this case, the verb is the last word in the sentence. You’ll know the sentence has a subordinate clause if it contains connecting words like ‘weil’ (‘because’) or ‘dass’ (‘that’). In questions, the verb is placed before the subject.
It’s also important to master the conjugation of ‘sein’ (‘to be’) and ‘haben’ (‘to have’). These two verbs are the building blocks for past and future tenses, although many Germans avoid using the future tense by combining words like ‘tomorrow’ with present-tense verbs.
Tip Three: Articles Change Depending on the Case
In German, case reflects the role of the noun in a sentence. How the noun is used may change the article.

Tip Four: ‘Sie’ Is Different Than ‘sie’
When ‘Sie’ is capitalized, it is the formal pronoun for ‘you’ used to refer to someone with respect.
When ‘sie’ is lower case, it can mean ‘she,’ ‘they,’ or a polite ‘you.’ To know which one to use, look at the verb in the sentence. If it ends with a -t, then it means ‘she.’ If it ends with -em, it means ‘they’ or ‘you,’ depending on the context of the sentence.
