How Does FIDE Test Scoring System Work?

Once you’ve taken the FIDE test, evaluating your proficiency in a language like German, French, or Italian, how do you know how well you did? Unlike a traditional test, the FIDE test isn’t graded with a number or percentage. Instead, you’ll receive a language proficiency level for each section. It’s based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or ‘CEFR’ for short.

So, how does the FIDE Swiss system work? It’s an official assessment of how well you speak, write, read, and listen in one of Switzerland’s nationally-recognized languages. The test is a must if you plan to live or work in the country, so it’s important to get quality tips for getting started with the FIDE language test.

Evaluating Skills Independently

When you’ve taken the FIDE test, both sections are evaluated on their own. You may find your final results show different ranks for each area. For example, you may find you’re an A2 level in reading and writing but an A1 level in speaking and oral comprehension.

Your results are put into what’s known as a FIDE Language Passport, which is an official document that outlines your CEFR levels and is proof of your proficiency in that language. This is how FIDE test certification works.

It’s not your typical ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ score, so what matters most is making sure you meet the language requirements for your specific goal. For Swiss citizenship, for example, you most likely need a B1 level in oral communication and A2 language skilll level in the written portion.

Testing Real-Life Situations

The FIDE test is designed to find out how well you handle real-world scenarios like ordering at a restaurant, checking out at the supermarket, or finding your way through town on public transportation. The scoring system is meant to determine how well you can function in everyday life, so there’s no need to put pressure on yourself to perform perfectly.

What Happens If I Don’t Pass?

Not everyone gets the score they need on the first try. The good news is that you can always retake the section you need to improve upon.

If you want to try and minimize the amount of times you take the test, however, a good lesson plan can help. Mock exams are your friend and can help you make sure you know your stuff and can test well in the amount of time you’re given.
