A FIDE certification demonstrates that you are proficient in one or multiple Swiss national languages. Foreigners typically get a FIDE certificate for immigration purposes because it’s a prerequisite for residence and settlement permits or as part of the naturalization process.
A FIDE certificate is also beneficial for other reasons, particularly relating to your career. Having it shows your readiness to integrate into the local community. It’s proof that you can communicate effectively in everyday situations. If you can show higher proficiency levels, potential employers will be more confident in your ability to navigate professional situations, increasing your chances of landing a better job.
Getting FIDE Certification
Getting a FIDE certification is a relatively straightforward process. The test is very accessible, with multiple test dates and exam centers located throughout Switzerland.
The first step to obtaining FIDE certification is to register for the test. You must do this at least fifteen days before your exam date at a test center near you (it doesn’t have to be within the same city you live in).
Next, you must pass your test. The FIDE exam has two parts: oral (speaking and comprehension) and written (reading and writing). The entire test lasts a little over an hour and a half.
You’ll receive your test result about four weeks after your exam. If you pass, you’ll get a Language Passport with your score. FIDE certification follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), so you’re assigned either level A1, A2, or B1 in the oral and written components of the test based on your capabilities. You can use your Language Passport for various purposes, including as proof of your skills for new job applications.
If you don’t pass the test, you don’t get a Language Passport. However, you can retake the test as many times as you’d like.
How FIDE Certification Can Help Your Career
Most people obtain FIDE certification for immigration purposes, or simply as proof of language proficiency. It also offers significant benefits for foreigners seeking to start or advance their careers in Switzerland.
Here’s a quick list of FIDE certification benefits for careers:
Adaptive Format
Unlike other language proficiency exams where you preselect a level beforehand, the FIDE test is adaptive. The exam adjusts to your skills and gives you a corresponding score afterward.
If you demonstrate A1- or A2-level proficiency, the test stops at those levels. If you reach B1-level proficiency, then it continues to test your skills more intensely.
Practical Focus
The FIDE exam mimics everyday scenarios, such as conversing with your neighbors, consulting a doctor, or speaking to a government official. During the oral portion of the test, the examiner will typically converse with you about topics or situations you’re familiar with.
Accessibility
At only 250 CHF, the FIDE test is a more affordable option than many other language proficiency exams. You can also opt to take the two exam components separately. On its own, taking the oral portion costs 170 CHF, while its written counterpart costs 120 CHF.
