What Is the Intermediate Exam in Germany?

As you learn the German language and master the basics, you’ll likely need to pass an assessment before advancing to the intermediate level. You can take either the Goethe or the European Languages exam (commonly known as the ‘TELC test’) in Germany to determine if you have enough language skills for an intermediate program. Both are recognized internationally.

What are the levels of learning the German language? The six different levels of language proficiency begin at A1 and end at C2. B1 and B2 levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) are considered intermediate.

Prepare for the Intermediate Exam

The exam ensures you know what intermediate German is and have a foundational knowledge of the language. Intermediate German involves understanding more intricate sentence structures, expanding your vocabulary, and achieving more fluency in daily conversations.

The exam has four components: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Here are some ways to prepare:

  • Practice reading and comprehending different content, from short articles to full announcements.
  • Expose yourself to the German language through mediums such as casual conversations and formal presentations. This will help you hone your listening skills.
  • Try writing on familiar topics to strengthen your understanding of sentence structure.
  • Participating in conversations will test your speaking skills. Discussing everyday topics will help you become more fluent and confident.

Also, familiarize yourself with the test format and practice regularly before exam day.

Benefits of the Test

The intermediate exam is important for people hoping to validate their German language proficiency level. Achieving this certification demonstrates competence in everyday German and can open doors to new opportunities.

Mastering each CEFR level represents a milestone in language acquisition. It encourages individuals to demonstrate their skills in everyday situations while living or working in German-speaking countries.

The CEFR certification is recognized globally. It proves credibility and verification of your German language abilities.

Should I Get Help to Prepare for the Test?

You certainly don’t need to prepare for the CEFR exam alone. There are services, organizations, and tutors that can help you get ready. Here’s how they can help:

  • Motivation: A program or tutor can add a layer of accountability and motivation, encouraging you to study, practice, and grow more consistently.
